Cheetas!
Stunning But A Terrorist's Paradise
Security is virtually non-existence when it comes to screening pax and their luggage. On the other hand, rumors are that cheetahs are kept within the airport confinement to chase away gasells and other animals of the runways. The interior and garden of HDS are stunning however. The waiting area indoor is small but looks like a luxury saloon you occasionally see on whiskey commercials. In essence a positive mark for airport coziness and a big minus for security.
Personal Experience
This is the tiniest airport I have ever seen. Security screening is a joke! There is no x-ray to check carry-on pieces. A man in military uniform did a cursory examination of the bag. The airport is located within a double fence, with a watch tower at the gate. Supposedly, the airport is within a South African Air Force base. The staff are casual and friendly.
I flew into Hoedspruit from Cape Town during an around the world trip and was so excited to see cheetahs on the runway when we landed! We came in for a safari at the Kapama River Lodge with a group so we never dealt with any security or even saw a physical building. We went from the plane, grabbed our luggage, and hopped into a jeep and drove away. The staff on the runway were friendly and all of our belongings arrived safely. Not your normal airport – but no waiting, no TSA, no bomb threats – just cheetahs and beautiful scenery. Can’t wait to go back!
